This watch is ordered with white or black dial and is so popular that the watch is only available with several years of waiting. Fake Daytonas often use Miyota watch movements. These movements are used in Citizen/Seiko watches, among others.

Unfortunately, nowadays, especially with Rolex watches, many fakes can be found. A description of product features is only a first clue and does not guarantee that you will recognize a fake. So in case of doubt, always seek advice from a Rolex concessionaire!

Here are a few things to consider before buying a Rolex:

Engravings on the cover of the clock: Rolex watches do not have any engravings on the back of the watch case, the surface is smooth or brushed.

Exceptions:

  • Limited edition so-called number Rolex: quartz model of a Rolex, engraving on the left side of the case.
  • Ladies models of the early 90s: "Original Rolex Design", circular engraving.
  • Sea Dweller: "Rolex Oyster Original Gas Escape Valve", circular engraving along the rim.
  • Special models like the Comex and several "Expiditions" watches engraved by Rolex

Date magnification and magnifier: Rolex watches with date display have magnifiers on the glass above the date. This is to display the date numerals magnified, namely by 2.5 times the actual size. The maximum magnification factor is 1.5 for fixtures. The date numerals should fill the entire area, but some counterfeiters use the trick and print the numerals larger from the start.

Hologram stickers: Original Rolex watches were provided with a hologram sticker until 2007, which shows the golden Rolex crown above the black reference number. Special feature of this sticker is its 3-D effect. Counterfeits often have only two-dimensional or silver stickers.

Current models use transparent films with only the model reference number printed on them.

Minute hand: The minute hand on the genuine Rolex Yacht-Master is much thicker than on other Rolex sports models. Counterfeits are equipped with the thinner minute hand, usually intended for the Rolex sports models. The Rolex Daytona features an extra-long, slightly rounded hand. Counterfeits of this model have a much shorter and angular minute hand.

Serial number: Each Rolex watch has a serial number, which is located on the side of the case between the lugs at 6 o'clock. The engraving is very fine and appears in the light like a diamond engraving. The engraving on counterfeits is often thick and dull, furthermore the numbers are very close together, whereas on the original there is always some space between them. In addition, counterfeiters often use the same serial numbers, very popular is especially the number R863698. This almost certainly indicates a counterfeit.
